Alex MORRISON, North Cleggan
Born Greenock 1915. Living 2002.
His father (?Sandy) a nephew of Mrs Catherine McCurdy (née Morrison), mother of Mrs Mary Craig above. His paternal grandfather (or grandmother) must have belonged to the same family as Caitriona, Mary and Paddy the Climber. His mother Gallagher, of Donegal Protestant stock. His siblings include a sister (alive in Greenock in 1991), and a brother Michael.
"Alex Morrison was born in Greenock of Rathlin parents in 1915. On
his mother's death in 1919, Alex was brought to Rathlin to be
reared by an aunt of his father's, Caitriona McCurdy (nee
Morrison), who was born in 1840. There were also two sons and a
daughter-in-law in the household [they were John, his wife Mary
Ann John Roe, and Patrick]. The McCurdy family was one of the
few island families in which Irish remained in everyday use, so
Alex grew up with the language, unlike most of his generation. He
never learned to read or write Irish, however, because the
language was not taught in the local school. With the exception of
Caitriona, who had died in 1936, all of the McCurdy family members
supplied Holmer [1937] with linguistic material, Alex being his
youngest informant. Like many other islanders, Alex spent most of
his adult life at sea and was away from the island for extended
periods from about 1945. He, therefore, gradually began to lose
contact with the language and by 1950, with the passing of the
older generation, there was no one left on the island with whom to
converse in Irish. Alex would find it difficult to conduct a
conversation in the language now, but he still possesses a large
store of words and phrases, many of which are not found in
Holmer's work."
Alex's mother was Gallagher (of Donegal stock), who turned to be a
Catholic to marry Alex's father. Alex's sister (still alive in
Greenock in 1991) was brough up a Protestant by her mother's people.
Alex says he can't converse in Irish. I thought he was just saying
this because he knew that present-day Irish speakers wouldn't
was always a passive one. He could still give Holmer words and
phrases without being practised in conversing actively.
